Q: Where do we send our flight call recordings or data?

****************************

A: As of early 2009, there is no central depository for avian night flight call recordings or data. There is also no standard protocol for such monitoring. Networks of standardized recording systems with capabilities of automatically uploading data will be arising soon, but in the meantime recordists are on their own. The current paradigm for home monitoring is that one archives their own data and begins to network with others who are monitoring in their region. These regional networks will then likely coalesce into continental networks. Before this occurs, it should be stated that any recordings made now may have significant historical value in documenting bird populations and distribution. All night recordings of the night sky made each evening throughout a whole migration season will be particularly important archives.
