Indigo Bunting Passerina cyanea

Flight call description A high, very buzzy, usually slightly rising "dzzzt".

Similar species  Higher-pitched and coarser than Painted Bunting and Blue Grosbeak. Compare with Common Yellowthroat and the zeep group warblers. See buzz calls.

 

Behavior Primarily a nocturnal migrant but engages in redetermined migration and limited resumed migration. Gives flight call regularly while perched and in flight during the day and during nocturnal migration.

 

Spectrographic description Measured calls (N=15) were 87.7-138.8 (110) mS in duration and in the 5.3-9.7 (6.1-9.1) kHz frequency range. The frequency track was double-banded and level or slightly rising. It was modulated with 5.5-10 (8) deep, jagged humps with as spacing of 11.4-13.5 (12.1) mS and a depth of 0.8-1.5 (1.2) kHz.
