Similar species Lower and more plaintive than Song and Fox Sparrows. Lower than Grasshopper Sparrow and typically upward-arched.
Behavior Nocturnal migrant. Gives flight call regularly while perched, particularly around dawn and dusk, during the day, and presumably during nocturnal migration.
Spectrographic description Measured calls (N=4) were 129-156 (139.5) mS in duration and in the 6.2-8.7 (6.4-8.4) kHz frequency range. The frequency track was single or double-banded and typically slightly upward-arched. The space between the bands was typically small but ranged up to 1 kHz.
