2016 National Moth Week & Moth watching events
in the Finger Lakes Region of New York
Friday July 8th (starting at 9:30pm): Stonybrook State Park Moth Night. Meet at the picnic shelter near the campground. Led by Jason J. Dombroskie, Ph.D., Collection Manager, Cornell University Insect Collection & Coordinator of the Insect Diagnostic Lab Location. Bring a lawn chair, a head lamp or flashlight, warm clothes, and a camera.
Saturday July 9th (9pm-midnight): Ithaca Moth Night. This is the fifth annual Ithaca Moth Night. Meet at the main parking lot of Robert H. Treman State Park (lower unit) any time after 9pm. There will be moth watching at four light stations, a demonstration on the varying attractiveness of different types of light, and a bait line around the edge of the parking lot adjacent to the park office. We traditionally rely on kids to help paint the moth bait (fermented fruit and brown sugar) on tree trunks at about 8:30pm. Access to the park is free after 6pm. The event will be cancelled if heavy rain and/or lightning are in the vicinity.
Saturday July 23rd (starting at 9:30pm): Fairhaven Beach State Park Moth Night. Meet near the Pond Shore restroom. Led by Jason J. Dombroskie, Ph.D., Collection Manager, Cornell University Insect Collection & Coordinator of the Insect Diagnostic Lab Location. Bring a lawn chair, head lamp or flashlight, warm clothes, and a camera.
Saturday July 30 (9pm-11pm): Moths of the Night. As the sun sets we will have a brief introduction to moths and then fire up a bright mercury vapor light and two ultraviolet lights to attract the moths. We will learn how to identify the myriad forms of moths that arrive through the night and learn about their natural history. Stop by for a few minutes or bring a lawn chair and hang out for the evening. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Instructor: Jason J. Saturday Aug 6 (9-11pm) (Aug 7 rain date): Finger Lakes Land Trust Moth Night. Bring a lawn chair, a head lamp, warm clothes, and a camera. Several lights will be set up for moth and other insect observation and we will discuss the identification and natural history of the species that come in. Leading this event will be Jason Dombroskie, Manager of the Cornell University Insect Collection and Coordinator of the Insect Diagnostic Lab. He has 25 years of experience mothing and has many years of experience leading interpretive talks and walks on natural history. Roy H. Park Preserve (north entrance).
